HTTP protocol

Because there are a wide variety of computers, a protocol must be established by which different computers will follow in order to communicate with each other. There are a number of different protocols, each useful for certain purposes - for example, ftp, which stands for file transfer protocol, is used to simply transfer files from one computer to another. Over the web http, which stands for hyper text transfer protocol, or https, for secure connections, is the dominant protocol.
