Slide 1 of 8
Previously we have learned about Newtonian mechanics, and how to apply
his three laws to the motion of terrestrial objects. Newton's Law of
Universal Gravitation, took this accomplishment one step further, and
provided a unified description of both terrestrial objects, and the
heavenly bodies. This was one of the most remarkable and successful
applications of the scientific method and it helped to change the way
people thought about science and its role in their everyday lives.
Much of the information contained in
this section was found in the excellent book: The Ascent of
Science by Brian L. Silver, Oxford University Press: Oxford,
1998.
